ARTIST STATEMENT

 

These works explore internal emotional landscapes through the action of painting, drawing,  printmaking, and photography.  The emphasis of this exploration is on emotion translated into visual language through presence in the moment.  This emotion, rather than a preplanned strategy, guides the visual rendering of imagery. Each image is a unique expression, a frame in the stream of consciousness that takes place sequentially in time.

 

Reflection on the completed paintings and drawings brings forth visual symbols of the natural world that comingle with personal iconography.  These symbols conjure up fundamental archetypes of nature, a personal sense of the chemistry in its early stages of formation, and a deepening experiential understanding of primordial organic principles that sustain life.

 

Some of these works include features of the paper itself, such as torn edges.  The appearance of tearing in combination with image content is like taking the brush to the paper encouraging consideration and spacial relating with the marks and shapes that are drawn.

 

Similarly, the photographic images as with the works made by hand explore a stirring of feeling that holds attention when experiencing changing environmental landscapes. Qualities that draw me such as contrasting edges of ever changing organic shapes, light, and color of the natural world inspire my own interior landscapes during reflection.

 

Creating with diverse media facilitates an alchemy of observation and expression; being and becoming.
